Abstract

The length of the primate Mhc varies not only between species but also between individuals of the same species. The length differences can be as great as several hundred kilobase pairs (kb) (see chapter by Hanini et al., this volume). The most variable in this regard are the DR subregion of the class II region and the class III region. The length variability of the class III region is discussed elsewhere in this volume (see Figueroa 1997); here we shall focus on the variability of the DR subregion.
