Abstract
Tetraorganogermanes are prepared by alkylation or arylation of germanium tetrahalides. Alkylation agents used before 1936 include Grignard reagents, organozinc compounds, and Wurtz-type systems with aryl halide and sodium powder. More recently organolithium and triorganoaluminum compounds are employed for technical reasons or where the older methods were unsuccessful.
