Abstract

Tumors of the kidneys form a rather heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Malignant tumors predominate, and among these, clear cell renal cell carcinoma accounts for most of the neoplasms. Papillary renal cell carcinoma comprises approximately 10–15 %, chromophobe 5 %, and carcinoma of the collecting duct of Bellini less than 1 % of all renal malignancies. Approximately 4–5 % of renal malignant tumors cannot be properly classified and are grouped under the heading of renal cell carcinoma unclassified. All other malignant renal tumors are rare (Mostofi and Davis 1998; Eble et al. 2004; Murphy et al. 2004; Bostwick and Cheng 2008).
