Quantum Dots for Biological Imaging

  • Chapter
Molecular Imaging

Part of the book series: Advanced Topics in Science and Technology in China ((ATSTC))

Abstract

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanocrystals that have attracted major interest as a new class of fluorescent biological labels. Their unique optical properties such as a broad excitation spectrum, narrow emission spectrum, precise tuning of their emission peak, longer fluorescence lifetime and high stability against photobleaching make them nearly perfect fluorescent probes. In recent years, there have been rapid developments in their use for biological imaging since the introduction of water-soluble and bioconjugated QDs to cell labeling and imaging by Chan et al. [1] and Bruchez et al. [2] in 1998.
