Abstract

There are two main types of remote sensing: passive and active. Passive remote sensing involves the measurement of natural emitted energy from the target. Active remote sensing involves the transmission of artificially generated signals to the target and measurement of properties of the return signal. Radar and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) are examples of active remote sensing. Remote sensors may provide information on one or more bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. Remote sensing also includes aircraft and satellite-based geophysical surveys.
