Metal Nanoparticles in Microbiology

Abstract

Various aspects of gold nanoparticles application are presented. The properties of gold nanoparticles can be modified by the adsorption of both polymers and biopolymers. The typical preparation strategies and applications of these gold nanoparticle–polymer hybrids are summarized. The unique optical properties of gold nanoparticles allow the use of these particles as labels for colorimetric detection of biomolecules. The application of gold nanoparticles for developing sensitive biosensors is described. The special catalytic properties of gold nanoparticles are presented. The rule of inorganic supports in catalytic processes particularly for understanding of CO oxidation is reviewed. The immense potential of gold nanoparticles for cancer diagnosis and therapy is discussed. One of the most promising areas of gold nanoparticles application is photothermal therapy, this problem is described. An antibacterial activity of drugs conjugated with gold nanoparticles is shown. The unique chemical and physical properties of gold nanoparticles for the drug transport are demonstrated.
