Zusammenfassung
Seit der Entdeckung der Röntgenstrahlen dient der Film als bildgebendes Medium in der Projektionsradiographie. Digitale Bildtechniken wurden ursprünglich durch die Astronomie eingeführt. In der medizinischen Radiologie war die 1973 eingeführte Computertomographie das erste bildgebende Verfahren, das sich der digitalen Bildtechnik bediente. Ermöglicht wurde diese Entwicklung durch die Verfügbarkelt von leistungsfähigen Prozessrechnern mit geringem Raumbedarf einerseits und dem Preisverfall der Mikroelektronik andererseits. Gemessen an den heutigen Verhältnissen, waren Rechengeschwindigkeit und Rechenkapazität sehr gering; daher verfügten die ersten Anlagen auch nur über eine kleine Matrix von 64 x 64 Bildpunkten. Diese wurde dann bei den ersten Ganzkörper-Computertomographen auf 128 x 128 Bildpunkte erweitert. Im Vergleich zum konventionellen Röntgenfilm war die Ortsauflösung der Bilder deutlich geringer, der Dynamikbereich jedoch um Zehnerpotenzen höher.
