Abstract
About 1% of all outpatient visits are related to chest pain, and of these patients, 1.5% will have unstable angina or an acute myocardial infarction. Chest pain represents a wide spectrum of disease, from benign to life-threatening conditions. The primary care provider has an essential role in the initial evaluation of such patients with a focus on a quick rule out of potential life-threatening conditions and further appropriately triaging the patient. The evaluation of patients with stable symptoms should focus on risk assessment for coronary artery disease and appropriate downstream noninvasive stress testing.
