Biology and Biotechnology of Actinobacteria

Abstract

Actinobacteria are high G+C DNA content, Gram-positive bacteria that represent one of the largest taxa among the major lineages recognized within the domain Bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis of Actinobacteria has been conducted mainly based on 16S rRNA sequences. According to the latest classification, phylum Actinobacteria consists of 6 classes, 6 orders, and 14 suborders. Apart from 16S rRNA gene, some alternative molecular markers like RpoB, SecY, RecA, RpoB, GyrB, DnaK, and GrpE have been subjected for constructing phylogenetic trees of particular groups of Actinobacteria such as Mycobacterium, Bifidobacterium, and Streptomyces. In addition, whole genome sequences have been employed for taxonomy studies of Actinobacteria. This chapter represents an update description on classification of Actinobacteria.
