Intramedullary Limb Lengthening

Abstract

With the object of eliminating pin and wire site inflammation and pain, surgeons have developed intramedullary lengthening nails that utilize telescopic rods with internal ratchet mechanisms that elongate the bone. Such devices include the Bliskunov® nail, the Albizzia® nail, and the ISKD®. The Fitbone® nail contains an electric motor, powered via a subcutaneous induction coil to elongate the device. The Phenix® and PRECICE® intramedullary nails each have a rotating magnet on a spindle that responds to a moving external magnetic field.
