Abstract
During the Define stage, the leader of a quality improvement project works closely with the team to determine in-scope and out-of-scope items. Project scope is communicated through the project charter document. The Project Scope Guide is a tool that provides the team with several parameters to consider in the design. It is important to keep the project scope from growing too broad or becoming too narrow, and there are practical ways to determine the optimal parameters. Since effective quality improvement requires analysis of the right data, understanding how to harness the vast amount of information in electronic medical records is crucial, and informatics professionals are an excellent resource.
