Abstract

Ultrasonography has become an essential tool in the hands of the pediatric hepatobiliary surgeon. Preoperative assessment of liver parenchyma, vasculature and biliary system determine the optimal operative strategy. Intraoperative sonographic evaluation of tumor margins helps guide the resection. Color Doppler assessment of parenchyma and anastomosed vessels help to detect vascular complications during and after a liver transplant. Intimate familiarity with segmental hepatic anatomy and vascular variants is imperative for the successful use of ultrasonography in pediatric hepatobiliary and transplantation surgery.
