The Demographics of Dialysis in Children

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Pediatric Dialysis

Abstract

Chronic dialysis has been available for children with kidney failure since the 1970s; however demographic trends and outcomes associated with dialysis have substatantially changed. This chapter describes the pediatric dialysis population throughout the world using data from national and international registries and published reviews and studies. Trends in incidence, prevalence, modality, primary kidney disease, and mortality are highlighted. Disparities in access to dialysis, and the likely underlying reasons for unequal access, are also described.
