Noninfectious Complications of Peritoneal Dialysis in Children

Abstract

Ensuring a well-functioning peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter is of particular importance for the patient and healthcare providers. The main factors threating catheter function and its longevity are infections and mechanical catheter problems. The latter include obstruction, leakage, hernia, and malposition. Surgical expertise with the applied implantation method appears more important for preventing short- and long-term catheter complications than the catheter type, design, or implantation technique. In addition to catheter-related problems, membrane failure can be responsible for chronic PD (CPD) termination. The adverse metabolic effects of the PD fluids may exacerbate cardiovascular risk. Prevention, early recognition, and appropriate management of these complications are of crucial importance.
