Abstract
The requirements for a polymer to form a semicrystalline structure on cooling are thoroughly discussed also in conjunction with the crystallinity concept and methods to assess crystallinity. The structural hierarchy of semicrystalline polymers ranging from the unit cell structure, the lamellar crystals and the superstructure are comprehensively treated including also an in-depth presentation of experimental methods. This presentation includes comprehensive discussions about chain folding, lamellar branching, lamellar twisting, relationship between lamellar structure and superstructure, dominant and subsidiary crystals, and the nature of the amorphous chains in semicrystalline polymers. The final sections present structure-property relationships of different semicrystalline polymers and tie chains and trapped entanglements and how their presence influences fracture toughness.
