Abstract
Physicians are faced with a variety of challenges when treating rheumatic diseases. Such conditions are generally chronic, meaning that, with rare exceptions, they will persist for the rest of the patient’s life and may involve considerable suffering. The limitations they impose on leisure and work activities may have a profound psychosocial impact. The need for effective, sometimes aggressive treatment resulting from the severity of the symptoms and the risk of progressive disability must be weighed against the cumulative risk of toxicity.
