Abstract
The amount of effort expended in the study of atherosclerosis is impressive. While progress is being made, the problems are so complex it is difficult to know exactly where to apply our greatest energies. If we were to approach this disease strictly from an epidemiologic standpoint, we would be forced to conclude that this may be the most common self-inflicted disease in our society. This would have to be true if we accept the observations that cigarette smoking and dietary fat are the most important risk factors yet identified.
