Blood-Brain Barrier: Techniques for the Intracerebral Administration of Drugs

  • Chapter
Principles of Receptor Research

Part of the book series: Handbook of Psychopharmacology ((SIBN,volume 2))

Abstract

The greatest concern of the psychopharmacologist whose wish is to elucidate the properties of a given compound is its mode of action when administered by the systemic route. The basis for this is elementary. A drug that is prescribed to a patient ordinarily is taken orally or parenterally. For this reason, the vast majority of the research done on compounds that affect the central nervous system has utilized one or more of the systemic methods of administration. This having been said, there are five reasons why the logistics of this approach is not entirely coherent from a purely experimental—not clinical—standpoint.

The research reported in this chapter has been supported over the years by National Science Foundation grant GB-24592 and U.S. Office of Naval Research Contract N 00014-67-A-0226-0003.
