Abstract
The use of nonhuman animals in experiments investigating the etiology of addiction to alcohol and the effects of alcohol has been of unusual importance. In view of the possibility of inducing addiction, investigators have been understandably reluctant to use human subjects in procedures that require repeated exposure to alcohol over long periods of time. Consequently, data concerning experimental alcohol administration in man have been limited to two main lines of evidence: studies of the effects of alcohol upon nonaddicted individuals (Carpenter, 1962; Goldberg, 1943) and clinical observations of patients displaying previously established addictions to alcohol or other drugs. Much of the research involving addicted subjects has consisted of studies of continuing alcohol ingestion and of the effects of withdrawal from the drug (Isbell et al., 1955; Mendelson, 1964). Current reviews of recent work in these areas are presented by Carpenter and Armenti, French, and Mendelson in Volumes 1 and 2 of this work.
