Isolation and Characterization of Surface Membrane Glycoproteins from Mammalian Cells

  • Chapter
Methods in Membrane Biology

Abstract

Glycoproteins have been reported in surface membranes by many laboratories, and the literature has been reviewed (Cook, 1968; Ginsberg and Neufeld, 1969; Korn, 1969; Winzler, 1970; Ginsberg and Kobata, 1971; Kraemer, 1971; Guidotti, 1972; Sharon and Lis, 1973). Several reviews (Spiro, 1970; Marshall, 1972) and a number of books (Jamieson and Greenwalt, 1969, 1971; Aminoff, 1970; Gottschalk, 1972) concerning glycoproteins in general are available, so this chapter is not designed as a comprehensive treatise on the subject. The literature which is quoted is for the purpose of aiding an experimental approach to define surface membrane glycoproteins. Many of the procedures defined here have been described in detail (Ginsberg, 1972).
