Staging and Prognostic Factors

  • Chapter
Liver Metastases

Abstract

Autopsy series report that the incidence of liver metastases ranges from 10% to 50% in cancer patients. All malignant tumours can develop synchronous or metachronous liver metastases, for which multiple therapeutic options are available. In the past, several attempts have been made to tract liver metastases using different schedules of anticancer drugs. Over the last decade, new approaches such as liver resection, percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and cryosurgery amongst others have been used. Although encouraging results have been reported after almost every type of therapy, the choice of treatment is difficult and often depends on the specialization of the clinician performing the diagnosis. One of the most important considerations concerning the choice of treatment is the stage of the disease and the prognostic factors which can influence survival.
