Abstract
The application of nonparametric statistics and computer simulation to the failure prediction of cylindrical transmissions on the basis of the contact strength is considered. The load of the transmission is specified by means of a torque distribution (corresponding to light, normal medium, equiprobable medium, and heavy operation) or by means of a finite sample of torque values. The results indicate that the probability of a fault increases by an order of magnitude on transition from light to heavy operation.
