Electrical properties of magnetisable liquids

Abstract

RECENTLY developed magnetisable liquids comprising colloidal suspensions of soft ferromagnetic particles have attracted considerable scientific and technological interest1–3. The ferromagnetic grains are coated with a special film which prevents them from clustering together and maintains a true colloidal dispersion4. We have investigated the sensitivity of their electrical properties to magnetic fields and found some new ‘magneto-electric’ effects. An interpretation of these observations is suggested.
