Abstract
SHORT events are only recorded occasionally in stratigraphical sequences, for example, during periods of rapid sedimentation, or if the record is continuous or samples are very closely spaced. If the chronology is not very exact, even these occasional records cannot usually be reliably correlated, making it difficult to distinguish between ‘noise’ and real events (see ref. 1).
