Abstract

RELEASE of catecholamines from the chromaffin granules of the adrenal medulla and from sympathetic nerve endings is accompanied by release of chromogranins, specific soluble proteins contained within vesicles containing noradrenaline. Since protein (chromogranin) release is dependent on calcium and is stoichiometrically related to the amount of catechplamine released, release is thought to be by exocytosis1–3. We know no report of protein released at cholinergic synapses, but biochemical studies of isolated cholinergic vesicles have revealed that many different protein components are contained within these vesicles4. We report here evidence indicating that proteins are released from nerve terminals of the neuromuscular junction.
