Ribosomal Subunits produced by Cold Sensitive Initiation of Protein Synthesis

Abstract

Lowering the temperature of E. coli to 8° C results in an accumulation of ribosomal subunits arising from a block in initiating protein synthesis. It is likely that this explains the fact that cell division in E. coli does not occur at temperatures below 8° C.
