Antiviral Effect of Daunomycin

Abstract

Daunomycin, an antibiotic of the anthracycline group, acts chiefly on DNA and DNA-dependent RNA synthesis. Although too toxic for routine systemic administration, local application of daunomycin for the treatment of herpetic or vaccinial keratitis might be possible, particularly if the infecting virus has become resistant to 5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine.
