Abstract
IT has previously been reported1 that when a high-yielding strain of Penicillium chrysogenum was grown in shake flasks in a chemically defined arginine–lactose medium2 containing sodium sulphate labelled with sodium-35 in the absence of phenylacetic acid, a radioactive compound extractable with n-butyl-acetate was formed instead of benzylpenicillin. This compound differed in its chromatographic properties from any of the known penicillin degradation products.
