Abstract

The objective of the study was to synthesize and characterize the four different organic amides, such as octylpalmamide (OTP), octylstearamide (OTS), octylcaprilamide (OTC) and dicyclohexylaminebenzotriazole (DCHA.BTZ) and also characterize its corrosion protection behavior using them as volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) on the mild steel (MS) in Steam and Cl2 gas environment. Surface characterization of the metal sample has been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopic (FT-IR). Electrochemical and non-electrochemical studies like electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization studies and weight loss studies are carried out to characterize the corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency. Polarization measurement implied that corrosion inhibitors were behaved as mixed inhibitor predominantly as cathodic inhibitor. Adsorption of the inhibitor on metal surface has obeyed by Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Finally, OTS and DCHA.BTZ were found as a best VCI in Cl2 and steam medium via the above all characterizations.
