Historical seismicity in the Middle East: new insights from Ottoman primary sources (sixteenth to mid-eighteenth centuries)

Abstract

Considerable academic effort has been given to chart the history of the seismic activity in Middle East region. This short survey intends to contribute to these scientific attempts by analyzing Ottoman primary sources. There had been previous studies which utilized similar primary sources from Ottoman archives, yet 15 new earthquakes emerged from these sources. Moreover, the seismic impact of five known earthquakes will be analyzed in the light of new data from Ottoman primary sources. A possible tsunami case is also included in this section. The sources cover the period between sixteenth to the end of the eighteenth century. This article intends to foster interdisciplinary dialogue for the purpose of initiating further detailed studies on past seismic events.

  2. According to exchange rates given by Pamuk, this equals to 135 Venetian ducats (Pamuk Ş 2002, p. 64). In the same year, 1 kg of meat was sold at 2 akçes in İstanbul markets (Akça, Sümeyye 2005, p. 120).

  3. This earthquake was also documented in Orhan Kılıç’s study on sixteenth century earthquakes in the Ottoman empire (Kılıç, Orhan 1999, 673).

  4. It was 14 architect (benna) arşun in length and 20 architect arşun in width. Arşun or Arşın is still widely used in the Middle East and is approximately 0.76 m. For variations in time, see Taşkın, Ünal 2005, pp. 141–142.

  5. It was 22 endaze. An endaze is 0.650 m.

  6. It was 218 zira/arşun in the original document.

  8. The Bitter Sea mentioned in the document might be the Great Bitter Lake, al-Buhayrah al-Murra al-Kubra, a salt water lake which is now a part of the Suez Canal.

  9. The document is dated 6 years after the event. As there were no activity recorded in the vicinity of the city, it is viable to relate the document with this earthquake. See Yıldırım, Zahit 1996, pp. 173–174.
