Abstract
In this paper, we explore the role that Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) play in democratizing education in the USA and around the world, examining both the institutions and their larger context. We also put forth recommendations for reaching and empowering students attending MSIs and “students at the margins” across the globe.

Notes
Some may classify Southern Cross University (SCU) as an MSI, but as it was not explicitly stated in the institution’s mission statement that this institution aims to serve these populations, this paper did not include SCU in the list.
Another form of social whitening is when one is born black, but through an increase in social status, they may be labeled as “whiter” in some situations (Golash-Boza 2010).

Please note that institutions report self-identified students at the margins to IPEDS. Populations that do not self-identify can be assisted on a local level but not on a national level.
