Abstract
A new genus and species of zoarcid fish, Bellingshausenia olasoi, is described on the basis of five specimens collected from the Bellingshausen Sea, Southern Ocean, at depths of 602–615 m. Bellingshausenia is a lycodine that can be distinguished from all other zoarcid genera by the following combination of characters: seven branchiostegal rays, scapular foramen open, cranium narrowed, smooth ceratohyal-epihyal articulation, palatal arch well developed, supratemporal commissure and occipital pores absent, intercalar reduced and displaced backward and parasphenoid wing high. The relationships of the new genus are discussed.

Acknowledgments
I thank the scientific team, the captain, the crew and the UTM technicians of the B·I.O. HESPÉRIDES for their help during the BENTART-03 cruise, from which the specimens were captured. Special thanks to José Castro “Córdoba” for his expertise in fishing with the traps, and to Dr. Ignacio Olaso for helping me on board with the collection of the type specimens. I am also grateful to Carmen Benito (manageress, Servei de Radioisòtops, Facultat de Biologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Spain) for the X-rays and to Jordi Corbera for the illustrations. I thank my daughter Muriel for the English revision of the manuscript. The manuscript also benefited from the constructive criticism by the referees (Dr. M. Eric Anderson, Dr. Atila Esteban Gosztonyi, and a third anonymous referee). The BENTART-03 cruise was supported by the Spanish Antarctic Programme (CICYT). This study was supported by a personal grant from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, Spain: “Estudio taxonómico de los Zoarcidae (Teleostei: Perciformes) del Mar de Bellingshausen (Océano Antártico)” (CLG2007-28861-E/ANT).
