Summary

Interest in the laser heat treatment process has grown tremendously in the past few years. Highly localized, high heating and cooling rates inherent in laser processing are found to be beneficial to improve hardness, wear, and fatigue properties of many steels and cast irons. Development of reliable high-power CO2 lasers in the past decade has made this process industrially viable, and many industries have already adopted the technique. Present research in this area involves optimization of the process, evaluation of wear and fatigue properties, and development of a transport phenomena model to predict the hardened zone profile. This article reviews the state of the art of this process.
