Abstract
A statistical method is used to derive an exact formula for the state density for a fixed number of particles and holes in the equidistant spacing model (ESM). The exact numerical value of the Pauli correction and the analytical formula for the state density are obtained. A way to take into account pairing correlations in the new formula, using Kalbach's method, is proposed.
