Insurance coverage and other factors affecting utilization of inpatient psychiatric services

Abstract

The effect health insurance has on the length of stay in an inpatient psychiatric service was studied for an area that is used in much marketing research. A sample of 1416 admissions from three general hospitals, a proprietary psychiatric hospital, and a state funded community mental health center was used. It was found that length of stay in a psychiatric setting is the product of a constellation of factors.
