Summary
The kidneys of terrestrial birds have only few nephrons comparable to the Henles loop of mammals and their concentrating ability is only slightly developed. By contrast, the rat is equipped with a good concentrating ability.
Between the turkey and the rat is a distinct difference in measured stop-flow concentration patterns after ureteral occlusion during osmotic diuresis. Turkey: simple shaped curves generally with one maximum or minimum in the middle of the cumulative urine volume; osmolar free-flow values correspond to plasma osmolarity; only one osmolar minimum. Rat: concentration maxima or minima are distinctly more distally located than those of the turkey; osmolar free-flow values lie above plasma osmolarity; distal and proximal maxima more marked.
During water diuresis, the osmolar and the Na+ curves in both species changed characteristically. In the turkey the free-flow concentrations of Na+ and osmolarity sank but not so markedly as in the rat. For each parameter, the turkey showed only one proximal maximum; in the rat, there was a distal maximum for each and also a proximal for Na+.
The results suggest absence in the turkey of a concentration mechanism analogous to that in the rat. The more simple concentration patterns after ureteral occlusion is an indication of an imperfect differentiation of the avian nephron in both proximal and distal section—as compared to the rat. The less marked changes found in the stop-flow patterns of the turkey during water diuresis are interpreted as an indication of the antidiuretic hormone in the bird being of less significance in tubular function than in the mammal.
