Summary
Assessment of alcohol and drug use: a study on the validity of the Revised Quick Drinking Screen - Self-Report (QDS-R-S)
Fleur Kraanen, Yosha Hilhorst & Lieke Nentjes
For clinical as well as research purposes it may be important to assess the quantity and frequency of alcohol and/or drug use during a certain period of time. Often, the Timeline Followback interview (TLFB), a valid and reliable instrument to retrospectively assess daily substance use, is used for these purposes. However, administering the TLFB takes relatively long and the interview should be conducted by a trained professional. Therefore, the TLFB is difficult to implement in clinical practice. An alternative for the TLFB is the Quick Drinking Screen (QDS), a short questionnaire that estimates daily alcohol use during a certain period of time. Recently, the QDS was adapted to assess drug use as well, but psychometric properties of this Revised QDS - Self-report (QDS-R-S) have not been studied. The current study investigated the concurrent validity of the QDS-R-S with the TLFB among 61 students of the University of Amsterdam. The QDS-R-S appeared a valid instrument to assess the use of alcohol, cannabis, and XTC. These findings support the applicability of the QDS-R-S for clinical as well as research purposes. Future research should focus on replicating these results within a clinical population.
