Samenvatting

Arteriitis temporalis komt niet vaak voor in de huisartsenpraktijk. Bij patiënten van 50 jaar en ouder met hoofdpijn moet de huisarts aan de mogelijkheid denken. Tijdige herkenning en behandeling met corticosteroïden kan een gevreesde complicatie, namelijk blijvend visusverlies, voorkomen.

Er is, behoudens het aantonen van typische vaatafwijkingen door middel van een biopt uit de arteria temporalis, geen gouden standaard om de diagnose te stellen.

In dit artikel worden de klachten en symptomen besproken die bij arteriitis temporalis kunnen passen en de betekenis van laboratoriumdiagnostiek voor de diagnostiek. Tevens wordt aandacht besteed aan de behandeling door de internist/reumatoloog en de rol van de huisarts hierin.
