Existence of a major spore wall protein (23K) in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe: A possible sporulation-specific protein

Abstract

By sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, we analyzed polypeptides solubilized from spore walls of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. A prominent protein band whose apparent M r was 23,000 was found on stained gels. This major spore wall polypeptide (23K) existed most abundantly in the cellular homogenate of sporulating cultures, while the corresponding band was almost absent in the extract from nonsporulating cultures.
