Abstract
Purpose of Review
Pediatric corneal transplantation is technically challenging. Recently, developments in adult corneal transplantations have been implemented in children. This article provides a historical perspective and reviews the latest developments in the field and, in doing so, aims to provide recommendations on the best practice for pediatric keratoplasties.
Recent Findings
Outcomes of conventional penetrating keratoplasties in children have improved due to technological advances in pre-operative assessments, evolution of intraoperative techniques, careful post-operative follow-up, and prompt complication management. Newer types of corneal transplantation, such as deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty and endothelial keratoplasties, have also been successfully adopted in children. Recent scientific breakthroughs in biosynthetic material and corneal cellular regeneration hold great promise in our treatment of pediatric corneal diseases in the future.
Summary
With careful case selection and standardized perioperative preparations, outcomes of pediatric keratoplasties can be optimized. Adaptation of newer surgical techniques and emerging research developments could revolutionize pediatric keratoplasty in the future.
