Abstract

Despite the fact that the impact of wastewater pollution on biodiversity is very important, few investigations have been done on different animal groups. In particular, the impact of heavy metal pollution on the biodiversity of mesofauna such as insects and Hexapoda; Collembola has not been further investigated. Collembola are a very diverse, but poorly-known group of soil mesofauna. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the biodiversity of Collembola communities of the polluted soils by municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants, with the chemical and physical characteristics of the soil. Additionally, identifying the taxa, which are most sensitive or tolerant to soil stressors, was of our interests. Regarding the sampling, a considerable number of specimens belong to Collembola from the treatment plant soils around Parkandabad, Khin Arab, and Charmshahr, Mashhad, were collected. The results show that almost all the Collembola species are significantly sensitive to heavy metal concentration pollution, especially to the amount of Cr, Ni, and Fe. These specimens show a positive correlation with the concentration of the total carbon. In the studied area, anywhere these three metals were high, the richness and abundance of the total Collembola decreased significantly. It should be noted the concentration of Cr and Ni was above the thresholds set by the European Commission, but Fe was lower than that level. Our results demonstrate that Collembola species are appropriate bio-indicators for the soil pollution, especially for the ecosystems where affected by the industrial wastewater treatments.
