Abstract

The first publications related to tracheotomy and its implementation in Greece appeared in the medical print media in the 19th century. The first tracheotomy in Greece was carried out without anesthesia in the house of a small patient in 1864 by Tilemachos Maratos and Theodoros Aretaios. They subsequently reported the problems they faced and the outcome of the patient, thus setting the foundations for the implementation and establishment of tracheotomy in Greece. A short biography of Theodoros Aretaios follows.
