Abstract
Tracheotomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the critically ill patient with airway obstruction or difficult airway management.
It was described and used for airway control and lifesaving treatment for at least 3500 years.
The procedure can be performed by various surgical techniques, at the bedside in the intensive care unit or in the operating room, as an emergency or elective procedure.
This chapter will present and discuss available techniques, indications, contraindications, complications, tips and tricks according to clinical situations, patient’s conditions, and comorbidities.
