Abstract
In this chapter the current status of in-beam spectroscopy to measure nuclear electromagnetic transitions in order to unravel the structure of excited states of the atomic nucleus is discussed. After a short presentation of recent developments for high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometers and a short introduction to electromagnetic transitions in atomic nuclei, the methods used for characterizing excited nuclear states using in-beam spectroscopy are presented in detail and illustrated with recent results obtained using different types of nuclear reactions.
