Teaching and Learning Second-Language Pronunciation Using Online Resources

Introduction

The earliest manifestations of computer-assisted pronunciation teaching (CAPT) operated on either integrated hardware-software workstations or desktop computers. Today, increasing numbers of language learners, realizing the importance of pronunciation to second language (L2) communication, rely on online tools (websites or mobile apps). Consequently, this article concentrates on pronunciation teaching/learning resources accessible online via personal computers, tablets, or smartphones.

Framing the Issue

Early advocates of CAPT anticipated many benefits for L2 learners: a tireless, consistent instructional system; individualized instruction in a private, stress-free environment; virtually unlimited L2 input; exercises involving both listening discrimination and focused repetition; practice that advances at the learners’ own pace; visual support; and the provision of instantaneous, individualized feedback based on automatic speech recognition (ASR), allowing for more...
