The use of spin coating interfacial polymerization (IP) technique in the preparation of thin-film composite membrane is rarely been reported in the literature, although it involves very similar procedure as the conventional IP technique. As illustrated in Fig. 1, it can be seen that instead of pouring organic solution directly on the surface of substrate containing amine monomer, the organic solution is spin coated over the substrate surface using the spin coating IP technique which is also known as dynamic IP. Owing to rapid acceleration of the spinning plate to the desired rotation rate, a powerful centrifugal shearing force is created which spreads away the organic solution from the axis of rotation toward the substrate outer edge. Because of this, it results in the IP reaction between the acyl chloride monomer in the organic solution and the amine monomer on the substrate surface, creating a very thin polyamide (PA) layer on the top of the substrate with good uniformity.
