Definition

Online database of colorants (dyes and pigments), published jointly by the Society of Dyers and Colorists (SDC) and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). The Color Index uses a dual classification system in which the prime descriptor is the Color Index Generic Name (often abbreviated to CIGN) which is related to application (usage). The other descriptor is the Color Index Constitution Number (often abbreviated to CICN) which is related to chemical structure.

Overview

First Edition

Early attempts to list and classify synthetic dyes and pigments, involving chemical structure and hue, appeared before the end of the nineteenth century [1]. The most successful system at this time was the Farbstofftabellen of Gustav Schultz (with seven editions between 1888 and 1932, followed by Supplements to the Seventh Edition in 1934 and 1939); each colorant was given a classification number. Meanwhile, from 1922, the Society of Dyers and Colorists...
