Abstract

“Geroscience” is a new interdisciplinary field that aims to understand the relationship between aging and chronic age-related diseases (ARDs). As age advances, many gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations appear without a diagnosable pathology, often overlapping with the onset or established organic diseases.

Because of the above, two situations arise. Over-testing for a nonspecific symptom resulting from diminished physiological functions or reserves, and secondly, a possible failure to perform appropriate diagnostic studies with disastrous consequences. Implications of age-related physiological alterations of the GI system and the pathophysiology of common GI manifestations in older adults are detailed.

In the introductory and other chapters, we have discussed the state-of-the-art developments in gastroenterology relevant to older adults. Whenever appropriate, we have included anatomical aspects, physiology, and pathophysiology relevant to advancing age and clinical applications. This chapter is complementary to the elaborate discussions in the many chapters by authorities in the field.

Gastrointestinal functions are closely connected with the central nervous system. The emerging field of neurogastroenterology explains the gut-brain interactions or crosstalk by the nexus of (1) the enteric nervous system (ENS), (2) the gut-hormones, including various neurotransmitters, and (3) the gut microbiota.

The chapter summarizes the essential and primary data pertinent to recent developments in GI physiology pathophysiology. The subsequent chapters discuss the needed information in detail.
