Definition

Fisheries management is the process of data collection, analysis, planning, consultation, decision-making, formulation, and implementation of regulations to govern fisheries activities. Its goal is to assure the continued productivity of fishing resources, which are a source for human livelihood, food, culture, and recreation.

The need to consider the sustainability of ecosystems, in addition to a long-term commitment to the welfare of human societies, has been the trigger for new definitions and approaches to manage fisheries, such as the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF). EAF seeks to balance societal goals with ecosystem heath by combining the need to conserve biodiversity, ecosystem structure and functioning with the provision of food, income, and livelihoods, without jeopardizing the options for future generations, thus aligning with the overarching principles of sustainability.
