Definition

mHealth refers to the use of mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablet computers, and personal digital assistants (PDAs), to provide medicine, public health, and health services. The purpose of mHealth is to improve population health outcomes, quality, safety, access, and efficiency of health services and health research (Istepanian et al. 2006; Kay et al. 2011).

Overview

mHealth, a rapidly expanding subset of eHealth (See “Digital Health/eHealth”), focuses on the utilization of mobile and wireless information and communication technologies (ICT) to support the achievement of health objectives. The ICT applications in mHealth include, but are not limited to, real-time voice and short message service (SMS) provided by mobile phones, more complex functionalities and applications based on general packet radio service (GPRS), third- and fourth-generation mobile telecommunications (3G and 4G technologies), global positioning system (GPS),...
